About Baheda / Thandrikai:
Terminalia bellirica, known as bahera or Baheda / Thandrikai or bastard myrobalan, Sanskrit: Bibhitaka, Aksha ), is a large deciduous tree common on plains and lower hills in Southeast Asia, where it is also grown as an avenue tree. The basionym is Myrobalanus bellirica Gaertn. This spelling error is now widely used, causing confusion. The correct name is Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb. The leaves are about 15 cm long and crowded toward the ends of the branches. Beleric / Thandrikai is considered a good fodder for cattle. Terminalia bellirica seeds have an oil content of 40%, whose fatty-acid methyl ester meets . The seeds are called bedda nuts. In traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Beleric / Thandrikai is known as "Bibhitaki" (Marathi: "Behada or Bhenda") (Terminalia bellirica). Its fruit is used in the popular Indian herbal rasayana treatment triphala. In Sanskrit it is called bibhitaka . In India, Neemuch (A Town in Malwa Region of Madhya Pradesh) is a major trading centre of De-Skinned Baheda & Whole Fruits of Beleric (Thandrikai). This tree, in Sanskrit Bibhita and Bibhitaka (fearless), is avoided by the Hindus of Northern India, who will not sit in its shade, as it is supposed to be inhabited by demons. Two varieties of Beleric / Thandrikai are found in India, one with nearly globular fruit, 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter, the other with ovate and much larger fruit. The pulp of the fruit ( Beleric myrobalan ) is considered by ayurvedic physicians to be astringent and laxative, and is prescribed with salt and long pepper in infections of the throat and chest.
As a constituent of the triphala (three fruits), i.e., emblic, Baheda / Thandrikai and chebulic myrobalans, it is employed in a great number of diseases, and the kernel is sometimes used as an external application to inflamed parts. On account of its medicinal properties the tree bears the Sanskrit synonym of Anila-ghnaka, or "wind-killing." According to the Nighantus the kernels are narcotic. The fruits are commercially used for tanning hides into leather, often in combination with other tanning materials. Baheda / Thandrikai is principally used in the production of sole leather. The fruits yield a dye that is occasionally used together with iron sulphate for dyeing black cloth and matting, as a cheap substitute for indigo, and for the preparation of ink. The kernels can be eaten, but they possess narcotic properties. The oil extracted from the kernels is used for hair-oil and in the manufacture of soap. The fruits are much applied in local medicine, for instance in Java and India. Unripe fruits are purgative, whereas ripe fruits are astringent and often employed in a mixture with chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula Retz.) in cases of diarrhoea, haemorrhoids and dropsy. The wood is considered to be of little value. It is used for construction in regions where other timber is scarce or expensive. Baheda / Thandrikai is used e.g. for boxes, furniture, and house construction after being steeped in water to make it more durable. Large-sized stems are used for dug-outs. The tree also yields a good-quality firewood and charcoal.
