Sirukurinjan / Gymnema Sylvestre also known as Gurmar. It literally means it kills the sugar. Sirukurinjan blocks intestinal absorption of sugar and the sugar passes through the system. It does not block the digestion of other foods such as starches and alcohol.Sirukurinjan raise insulin levels by regeneration of the cells in the pancreas that secrete insulin. Research has shown that it also improves uptake of glucose into cells by increasing the activity of the glucose utilizing enzymes, and stops adrenaline from stimulating the liver to create glucose, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. Sirukurinjan / Gymnema is nature's gift to mankind to destroy sugar. Sirukurinjan / Gymnema is also noted for lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides. It also abolishes the taste of sugar, which then suppresses and neutralizes the craving for sweets. The extracted gymnemic acid also acts as a cardiovascular stimulant.

Siddha Medicinal Uses :

1. Dried leaf powder of this plant can be given in the dose of 2 to 4 gram daily 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 6 months to treat Diabetes Mellitus. It is said that long administration of this medicine can even eliminate Sugar present in Urine. High doses of this medicine may help to regenerate Beta cells of Pancreas study and research says.
2. Administration of 5 to 7 grams of dried leaf powder along with milk can be given for Diabetes Mellitus, Sexual disfunction and Pyurea.
3. Leaf can also be administered as decoction twice for 3 to 4 weeks for Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Hypercholestrolemia etc.Powder of dried leaves can also be given to treat these ailments.
4. Leaf powder can be dusted or applied as a paste on the wounds due to snake bite. Infusion of dried leaves should be given internally.
5. Seed powder helps to cure Cough, Rhinitis and Asthma.
6. Leaves also cures Gastrointestinal dissorders like Constipation and Gas trouble when given as powder or infusion.
